Solving 21st Century Problems with Great Hearts and Great Minds
Katherine Johnson STEM Academy educates grades 6-8 with a progressive integrated STEM curriculum, featuring robotics and coding (1:1 Chromebooks taken home nightly), rooted in a social-emotional approach that guides students to understand and regulate their emotions.
As the LAUSD residential middle school for Westchester, Playa del Rey, and Playa Vista, we work in partnership with Loyola Marymount University as a demonstration school site designed to develop cutting edge curriculum, as well as the next generation of outstanding teachers, while simultaneously offering a wide range of educational opportunities, including a full-time Resource Specialist, along with Honors and GATE classes pushing our students to excel above their grade levels, specifically in math where we offer LAUSD’s Accelerated Math Curriculum.
Our in-person tour consists of a presentation by the principal, Kyle Hunsberger, along with visiting a few classrooms and our STEM Lab (funded by Google), which is a dedicated space that allows students to access advanced technology and where students feel empowered to engage in high-level problem-solving that is critical for student development in the 21st century.
